Braycote® 600EF High Vacuum Greas
The Braycote® 600EF high performance vacuum grease has been reformulated for manufacturing under more "environmentally friendly" circumstances and therefore carries the "EF" next to the product designation. Virtually all users should find the new 600EF to be indistinguishable from the original Braycote 600: Be sure you are familiar with the broader range of these unique fluorocarbon based grease products for vacuum applications.
Description:
Castrol Braycote® 600EF is a smooth, buttery, translucent off-white colored, NLGI #2 grease. Castrol Braycote® 600EF uses Castrol Brayco® 815Z as the base fluid and a tetrafluoroethylene telomer as the gelling agent.
This grease, like all the grease in the Braycote family, is nonflammable, chemically inert, and thermally stable and does not use any chlorofluorocarbons (CFC's) during product manufacture. It has exceptionally low volatility and has little tendency to form deposits. It has excellent lubricating properties, good shear stability, and low acute toxicity. Castrol Fluoroclean™ X100, CastrolFluoroclean™ HE, or PERFLUOROSOLV® PFS-2 Perfluorinated Cleaning Solvent can all be used to remove this lubricant.
Temperature Range:
-80°C/-112°F to +204°C/400°F
Uses:
Castrol Braycote® 600EF is designed to operate in the presence of fuels, oxidizers, and in applications of deep space vacuum. It is used in gears, ball and roller bearings, electrical contacts, and "O" rings. This grease is highly recommended for applications where temperature extremes and/or low vacuums are routine, such as cryogenic coolers, FLIR, laser optical systems, or hostile chemical environments. Perfluorinated greases, such as Castrol Braycote®600EF exhibit excellent shelf life due to their intrinsic inertness.
Finding some order in the confusion........
We are asked repeatedly about the differences "in easy to understand language" what are the real differences between Braycote 600EF, 601EF and 602EF. Keep the following in mind: The Braycote 600 series of greases starts out with a base grease which is Braycote 600EF, which in simple words is a PFPE (perfluorinated polyether) base oil with a PTFE (particle) thickener. Braycote 600EF is the "starting material" for Braycote 601EF and 602EF.
Braycote 601EF is therefore the same as Braycote 600EF except that it has had a corrosion inhibitor added. Braycote 602EF has had molybdenum particles added, instead of a corrosion inhibitor.
The addition of these additives do have an effect on the vacuum and some of the other characteristics, therefore should you be considering 601EF or 602EF, pay close attention to some of subtleties of the properties and how they have been altered.
Use in the Military:
Braycote 600EF, as well as has Braycote Micronic 803 vacuum grease, has been used on many weapons platforms (Trident missiles, Tomahawk, Minuteman, Smart Guided Weapons etc.). One of the main reasons for their attractiveness for military applications is their long term stability (no oxidation like hydrocarbons, no evaporation because of stability).
Limitations:
Castrol Braycote® 600EF is compatible with most commonly utilized materials, plastics, and elastomers, and may be adversely affected by Lewis Acid Catalysts such as aluminum chloride at elevated temperatures. Newly exposed rubbing surfaces of aluminum, magnesium and titanium alloys may react with Castrol Braycote® 600EF under certain conditions. Such systems should be thoroughly evaluated. Surfaces must be well cleaned or organic rust inhibitors prior to grease application to insure proper lubrication. This product is not recommended for use in applications under high vacuum with loads exceeding 100,000 psi for extended periods of time.
Typical properties:
One should review carefully the table of typical properties for Castrol Braycote® 600EF.
Compatibilities:
The product is compatible with most plastics, metals and rubbers. However, as is always the case when selecting a vacuum grease, you have to do your own testing to make certain that would be the correct situation in your specific case.
NGLI Grade: 2
Removal of unwanted grease from grease applied surfaces:
The composition of this product is a mixture of small PTFE particles (which won't dissolve in anything) and a perfluorinated polyether liquid. We have found that Castrol Fluoroclean™ X100 or Castrol Fluoroclean HE is an effective solvent for the liquid component of the formulated composition and aids in the removal of the grease from places where it is no longer needed or wanted.
