These high-quality single-edge razor blades are useful for mincing specimens, trimming tissue blocks, etc. Perhaps more importantly, the very small radius of curvature, for a carbon steel blade, results in an edge that really is "sharper" and which enables the cutting of bulky specimens with far less distortion than would normally be the case.
Metallurgy of the blades:
The GEM Scientific Razor Blades are fabricated from carbon steel, not stainless steel. The reason for this is very simple: One can achieve a sharper (smaller radius of curvature at the) edge with carbon steel than with stainless steel, and the GEM Scientific Razor Blades are the sharpest edges we can offer. In addition, they are not coated with oil or anything else to protect the edge and increase corrosion resistance. This does mean that the blades will rust easily if exposed to a moist environment. It also means that they will not contaminate the material being cut, a feature of great importance for many scientific and other technical applications. For those not familiar with razor blade technology, the ease of cutting of stainless steel blades is achieved by coating the cutting edge, not by the sharpness of the blade.
Other applications:
We are amazed at the wide diversity of applications for this high-quality single edge blade. For example, it is the preferred tool by oboe players for the making of their reeds. Only this blade seems to give the optimum mix of control and precision, in order to make the very best possible reeds!
Safety precaution:
Never use a razor blade for cutting without appropriate eye protection, for example, safety glasses. On an annual basis, there are quite a few eye injuries due to the improper use of razor blades of all kinds and virtually all such injuries could be prevented with appropriate eye protection.
Packaging:
Handy packs often are secured within an all-plastic safety dispenser.
NOTE: In May 2021, these dispensers have gone from the well-known yellow style to a clear box style. The blades in this dispenser at the same; only the container has changed.
For the bulk packaging, the blades all individually wrapped in paper for safety, with all 100 tightly packed in a plastic tray which is in a fiberboard sleeve. For cleanroom use, the sleeve is easily removed before taking the blades into the clean area.
