This is a heavy duty, concentrated detergent, developed especially for laboratory use, but for which there are many other applications outside the laboratory, that can be used either manually or in conjunction with ultrasonic cleaning. The product has been especially formulated to be "free rinsing" (e.g. easily rinsed off with running tap or distilled water) with virtually no redeposition of removed (and unwanted) materials, all of which translates to virtually a complete absence of any residues.

Alconox is anionic in nature and is ideal for not only the cleaning of contaminants from all forms of laboratory glassware, but also items of metal, plastic, ceramic, porcelain, rubber or even fiberglass construction.

4 lb. (1.81 kg) box

In most normal laboratory applications, it can be an excellent replacement for corrosive acids and hazardous solvents. In addition, Alconox is USDA authorized and a complete example trace analysis of the undiluted concentrate is made available for inspection. Alconox is biodegradable and is readily disposable. For ultrasonic cleaning and certain other applications, the "companion" Liqui-Nox® Critical Cleaning Liquid Detergent is preferred.

For use in an electron microscope or high vacuum laboratory where silicone fluids and vacuum greases are being used, Alconox is one of the very few common detergents that has some efficacy in terms of removing such materials. The silicones won't come off instantly, but Alconox is better than anything we have seen for those stubborn silicone fluid removal tasks. Using temperatures above 75°C (170°F), the process of silicone removal can be greatly enhanced (e. g. made to go much faster).

Ammonia free product:

Alconox does not contain ammonia. It does, however, contain EDTA, so if a total nitrogen analysis is done, a positive reading will result but that does not arise from the presence of ammonia.

Bacterial growth:

Alconox in concentrated form will not support bacterial growth, but many users pre-dilute to a "working" solution, and that will support bacterial growth. The bacteria may produce ammonia when they eat the EDTA, so in that instance, a positive reading on total nitrogen could indeed be indicative at least to some degree of the presence of nitrogen.

Is Alconox a disinfectant?

We need to draw a very careful line here. Alconox is effective in removing a wide variety of biofouling materials, including moldslime organisms. It is, however, not a disinfectant, and it will not prevent the future growth of these organisms.

Shelf life considerations:

We are often times asked about the shelf life of this product because of some of the critical applications in which it is used. Officially, it is oneyear, from the date of shipment from SPI Supplies, which corresponds to the date for which the performance is guaranteed by the manufacturer. The product is also guaranteed in terms of its performance for two years after manufacturing, which ever date comes first.

These shelf lives are very conservatively stated and noticeable degradation takes much longer, and the products will continue to work for a long time after they have technically expired, although the degradation will show up in very careful side -by-side comparative testing.
