This is one of those kinds of specimens that just shows up everywhere since it is so versatile. It's primary use is with an SEM because the unique structure of the prickly gold is about as ideal as one could hope in terms of checking for astigmatism. The specimen itself consists of 1000 mesh copper grid which has been given a unique proprietary coating of "prickly" gold. The gold is 99.99%.
For the SEM application, the grid should be ordered "mounted", meaning that we will mount the specimen on to the SEM mount of your choice. So be sure to specify which mount would be your top preference. [Note: not all SEM mount types available].
For TEM applications but when operating in the STEM or SEM mode, it would be better to order the product unmounted.
Care of the Specimen:
MOUNTED: Do not to touch the specimen surface. When not in use, store the specimen in the original container or some other container where the surface is protected.
UNMOUNTED: Gently grip the grid, as close to the outer edge as you can. A Style #4 or #5 tweezer may be helpful. Do not lay the specimen face-down on any surface. Bending the grid may cause the gold material to crack.
Do not immerse these standards in of any kind of liquid.
